Warm Honey Pears

One of the best things, in my opinion, of eating frugally is that is forces you to think outside the box.  Just to avoid monotony you are apt to find yourself reaching for recipes you never thought you’d try.  Or, you simply find yourself serving dishes for dinner that you might normally associate with another time of day.

While this recipe can, and does, make a lovely topping for ice cream (or pound cake) and while it can also serve nicely as a dessert on its own, it also makes a lovely sweet side dish for dinner as well.

Ingredients:

3 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons honey
1.5 tablespoon lemon juice
6 medium pears
1/4 to 1/2 tsp cinnamon

I have found that the cheapest supply of honey is usually found at my local warehouse store.

Directions:

Cut pears in half vertically and remove seeds, then cut into thick slices.

In a large frying pan melt butter honey and lemon juice together on the stove until they form a syrup.

Add pear slices and sprinkle with the cinnamon.

Saute pear slices until soft, turning over from time to time to ensure a thorough coating of the syrup.

Transfer to a large serving bowl (a pasta serving platter is ideal).

Serving:

This is a wonderful side dish when you are having “breakfast for dinner”. Served with pancakes or french toast it is truly delightful.

This also works well as a side for a meat-based dish. The flavors work well with roasted pork loin, baked ham, and even roasted chicken.

Variations:

  • use apples instead of pears
  • stir in a handful of raisins
  • stir in a handful of chopped nuts
  • add a teaspoon of real vanilla extract or another flavoring
  • use maple syrup instead of honey
  • use nutmeg or pumpkin pie spice instead of cinnamon
